American alternative rock band Vampire Weekend has released what is technically the second single from their forthcoming album Contra. The Cousins single follows the Internet release of Horchata (right), which was made available as a free download from the band’s website.
The music video for Cousins debuted online yesterday. The cover for the single is a photograph that appears to be have benen taken during the filming of the video. It features the band performing in an alley and being showered by confetti. The track on which the camera and the band moved during filming can be seen on the cover. It is a very interesting use of a filmmaking technique that usually remains invisible to the viewer.

Ummm, cool site, but Vampire Weekend are definitely NOT an alternative rock band by any means. Just FYI.
“Vampire Weekend are definitely NOT an alternative rock band by any means.”
Log on to iTunes and search for the band. Then, look and see what category they are listed under:
Music > Alternative > Indie Rock > Vampire Weekend
Then, go to Amazon.com and do the same thing.
You’ll see that Vampire Weekend is listed under:
Music > Alternative Rock > Indie & Lo-Fi > Indie Rock
I’m pretty careful about describing bands using the categories they are listed under by record stores and online retailers.
I work for an agency that represents major recording artists and Vampire Weekend is definitely an alternative rock band. There is no question about it. “Indie” is a subset of alternative. It has been that way for as long as I’ve been in the business.
