John Mayer’s Born and Raised voted best album cover for the week of May 22, 2012

According to our AlbumArtExchange Blog poll, the best album cover for the week of May 22, 2012 is Born and Raised by John Mayer. The cover received 44% of the votes cast by our readers. Joe Bonamassa’s Driving Towards the Daylight was second with 36%. Not Your Kind of People by Garbage and Kris Allen’s Thank You Camellia tied for third with 8% each.

The design of the winning cover is credited to David A. Smith. I was not able to find additional information about the designer. The cover is a very interesting and detailed Victorian-style illustration. It is certainly not a unique concept. However, it is one of the best examples I have seen. In recent years, this style has been used mainly for holiday albums.

New and Notable: Kylie Minogue

A few months ago, a reader described my preference for the artwork used for singles to integrate with the music video as a fetish. I suppose that may be accurate to a certain degree, especially when it involves my favorite pop stars. Kylie Minogue has not disappointed me with the artwork for her new single Timebomb. It coordinates perfectly with the music video. Both were released as a package on iTunes today.

Déjà Vu: Goldenhorse vs. The Vienna Philharmonic

AAX admin Aequi recently let us know about a déjà vu moment that he had involving the cover of the 2004 album Riverhead by New Zealand band Goldenhorse. It is almost identical to the cover art for the 1992 classical box set Mahler: Symphonies 1-10 by Lorin Maazel & The Vienna Philharmonic. The artwork and font are exactly the same. I don’t know if this is a tribute or a rip off.
