New and Notable: Kylie Minogue

A few months ago, a reader described my preference for the artwork used for singles to integrate with the music video as a fetish. I suppose that may be accurate to a certain degree, especially when it involves my favorite pop stars. Kylie Minogue has not disappointed me with the artwork for her new single Timebomb. It coordinates perfectly with the music video. Both were released as a package on iTunes today.

Déjà Vu: Goldenhorse vs. The Vienna Philharmonic

AAX admin Aequi recently let us know about a déjà vu moment that he had involving the cover of the 2004 album Riverhead by New Zealand band Goldenhorse. It is almost identical to the cover art for the 1992 classical box set Mahler: Symphonies 1-10 by Lorin Maazel & The Vienna Philharmonic. The artwork and font are exactly the same. I don’t know if this is a tribute or a rip off.

Variations on a Theme: Solar Eclipse

With a solar eclipse just minutes away, wondered how many album covers and single sleeves have featured the image of an eclipse over the years. A few came to mind immediately. However, I was surprised to discover that there are quite a few of them. I have posted a few from the AAX gallery below. It will be interesting to see how many albums will feature photographs from today’s event.

WTF?! Invisible Stars by Everclear

It has been quite a long time since an album cover has given me a genuine WTF?! moment. The cover art for the forthcoming album by Everclear finally did the trick. I am not sure if the photograph featured on the cover of Invisible Stars depicts a happy couple holding hands and jumping up in the air or if it is a gruesome double suicide. Are they hanging from a tree?! The album is scheduled to be released on June 26, 2012.

The Go Go’s We Got the Beat album cover recreated in junk

Check out the amazing artwork that is currently being used as the cover image for the official Go Go’s Facebook page. The artwork is the creation of San Francisco artist Jason Mecier. Mecier has worked for over 10 years creating 3-D mosaic portraits of pop culture icons, including Phyllis Diller, Rosie O’Donnell, P!nk, RuPaul, Margaret Cho, Scissor Sisters and many others. The portraits are created from items such as make-up, candy, pills, food and discarded junk donated from the celebrities themselves. Check out Mecier’s website for more information at a look at samples of his work.
