At the Movies: Magic Mike

The male stripper film Magic Mike opened in U.S. theaters today. It was directed by Steven Soderbergh, and stars Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Matthew McConaughey, Cody Horn, Joe Manganiello, and Matt Bomer in leading roles. The plot involves a veteran stripper named “Magic” Mike (Tatum) who teaches a novice (Pettyfer) how to bump and grind for the ladies.

The soundtrack is currently available as a digital download and on CD. It features 12 tracks by various artists, including Foreigner, Alice Russell and Matthew McConaughey. The cover art for the soundtrack features a photograph of the male stars doing their stripper routine.

Déjà Vu: Diamond Rings vs. Emeli Sandé

This Déjà Vu pair would be a good candidate for the “Bitch Stole My Look” segment of Joan Rivers’ celebrity fashion report. Scottish R&B artist Emeli Sandé and Canadian pop artist Diamond Rings (John O’Regan) are sporting the same blond Mohawk hairdo. I guess the only question we need to ask is “Who wears it best?”

Oceania by The Smashing Pumpkins voted best album cover for the week of June 19, 2012

According to our AlbumArtExchange Blog poll, the best album cover for the week of June 19, 2012 is Oceania by The Smashing Pumpkins. The cover received 36% of the votes cast by our readers. Fiona Apple’s The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do was a close second with 33%. Glen Hansard’s Rhythm and Repose was third with 18%.

Photography for the winning cover is credited to Richard Shay. Art direction is by Noel Waggener. I was not able to find information about where the tower in the photo is located. It is being described as a lighthouse. However, it looks more like an old radio relay tower to me.

At the Movies: Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

The fantasy horror film Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter opened in U.S. theaters today. Based on the novel of the same name, the film was directed by Timur Bekmambetov and co-produced by Bekmambetov, Tim Burton, and Jim Lemley. The plot involves Lincoln having a secret life as a vampire killer.

Music for the film was composed by Henry Jackman. The soundtrack album is currently available as a digital download on iTunes. The CD version is scheduled for release on July 3, 2012. The artwork for the album is a cropped version of the movie teaser poster.
