Charmer by Aimee Mann voted best album cover for the week of September 18, 2012

According to our AlbumArtExchange Blog poll, the best album cover for the week of September 18, 2012 is Charmer by Aimee Mann. The cover received 35% of the votes cast by our readers. Dwight Yoakam’s 3 Pears was second with 29%. Battle Born by The Killers and P!nk’s The Truth About Love tied for third with both receiving 13% of the vote.

The art direction for the winning cover is credited to Gail Marowitz. The illustration is by Ed Sherman. Sherman’s design for Charmer reminds me quite a bit of the retro cartoon illustrations of Lou Brooks (above right). Sherman also did similar illustrations for Mann’s 2008 album, @#%&*! Smilers.

Search for the Worst: Warrior by Ke$ha

I really did not believe that the cover art used by pop singer Ke$ha could get louder and tackier than what we’ve seen for her past projects. The good news is that the glitter is gone. However, it has been replaced by acid neon colors that haven’t been seen since Wham! bounced around on stage in the 1980s.

The photograph looks like they took Ke$ha out to a vacant lot in Phoenix, dressed in a luminous, plastic breast plate left over from Comic Con 2008. Then, they decided to liven it up in Photoshop. The makeup and styling are horrific. Ke$ha looks as if she’s either suffering from sunstroke or extreme boredom. It isn’t even quite bad enough to be campy. It is definitely one of the worst album covers of the year.

Warrior is scheduled to be released on December 4, 2012.

Lynyrd Skynyrd concerned about racism associated with Confederate flag

According to articles published by several online sources, Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington, has sparked angered some of the band’s fans over comments he made about the Confederate flag.

In a CNN interview earlier this month, Rossington said that the flag had been hijacked by racists and, in the process, become detached from it’s original meaning as a symbol of rebelliousness and states’ rights. As a result, he said, he was concerned about the band being associated with the flag lest people get the wrong idea.
Raw Story (http://s.tt/1o4Xi)

The band has often displayed the flag at their performances and it appears on several of their album covers. What is not really mentioned in the recent articles is that there are many violent white supremacist bands that display the Confederate flag. There are actually FBI and other government agents who track those bands as possible domestic terrorists. I really don’t blame Lynyrd Skynyrd for wanting to distance themselves from that.

Peter Blake designs album cover for Madness

Sir Peter Blake has designed the cover for the 10th studio album by English ska band Madness. Blake is the pop artist who is best known for creating the iconic cover art for The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (right). He has also designed album covers for Oasis and Paul Weller.

The artwork for Oui Oui Si Si Ja Ja Da Da, features a list of several titles that were supposedly considered for the album and then crossed off the list. The rejected titles include The 10 Commandments, Doolally, Dial M For Madness, Men of Steel, Circus Freaks, and The Rake’s Progress. Blake’s signature appears rather conspicuously under the actual title, which is the word “yes” in various languages. I’m not sure if the whole thing is supposed to be ironic or not.

Madness recently performed at the Olympics closing ceremony. The new album is scheduled to be released on October 30, 2012.

Away from the World by Dave Matthews Band voted the best album cover for the week of September 11, 2012

According to our AlbumArtExchange Blog poll, the best album cover for the week of September 11, 2012 is Away from the World by Dave Matthews Band. The cover received 25% of the votes cast by our readers. There was a tie for second place between Love This Giant by David Byrne & St. Vincent and Coexist by The xx.

The art direction and illustrations for the winning cover are by Dave Matthews. It kind of reminds me of a naked version of the Hollywood Squares.
