Bankrupt by Phoenix voted best album cover for the week of April 23, 2013

According to our AlbumArtExchange Blog poll, the best album cover for the week of April 23, 2013 is Bankrupt by Phoenix. The cover was the clear winner with 47% of the votes cast by our readers. Rob Zombie’s Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor was a distant second with 20%. There was a three-way tie for third between Love Has Come For You by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, To Be Loved by Michael Buble and Reincarnated by Snoop Lion.

The illustration for the winning cover is by Ben Garvie. A quick look at Garvie’s website indicates that he is primarily a food product illustrator. There are some very cool examples of his work.

Save Rock and Roll by Fall Out Boy voted best album cover for the week of April 16, 2013

According to our AlbumArtExchange Blog poll, the best album cover for the week of April 16, 2013 is Save Rock and Roll by Fall Out Boy. The cover received 43% of the votes cast by our readers. Mosquito by Yeah Yeah Yeahs came in second with 29%. Sarah Brightman’s Dreamchaser was third with 14%.

The photograph for the winning cover is “Punk and Monk” by Roger Stonehouse. It was discovered online by the band. In the original photo the t-shirt features the logo of the band AC/DC. It was altered for obvious reasons.

Album cover legend Storm Thorgerson dies at age 69

According to news reports today, legendary album cover artist Storm Thorgerson has passed away. Thorgerson was responsible for designing some of the most ironic album covers of the Rock Era. His most celebrated work is without a doubt the cover for Pink Floyd’s classic album Dark Side of the Moon.

Storm Thorgerson, whose surreal artwork helped define the album-rock era, has died at the age of 69. The British artist had been battling cancer and had suffered a stroke in 2003, his family said in a statement Thursday.

Although his work spanned decades and genres — from Led Zeppelin’s eerie Presence featuring a family surrounding a talismanic black object, to a hooded driver in Mars Volta’s 2005 Frances the Mute — Thorgerson is perhaps best known for the minimalistic genius of his cover for Pink Floyd’s monster-selling 1973 album, Dark Side of the Moon. The simple image of a prism refracting light on a black backdrop was a visual manifestation of the band’s haunting sonic message about friendship, commerce and lunacy.
