Lady Gaga reveals cover art for Applause single

dbowie-ashestLady Gaga has revealed the artwork for her forthcoming single Applause. The single is scheduled to be released on August 19, 2013 and will be featured on the album ARTPOP, which will be made available for preorder on the same day.

The photograph used for the cover is credited to Inez & Vinoodh (Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin), who have worked with Lady Gaga in the past. You can learn more about the duo and see additional examples of their work on their website at inezandvinoodh.com.

The photograph has been compared to others taken of Madonna and Nicki Minaj. However, it appears to be influenced more by the classic French pantomime character Pierrot, which has roots going back to the late 17th century. David Bowie used the character for his 1980 single Ashes to Ashes (above right) and associated music video.
